I think one thing that wasn't mentioned and a lot of people don't realise is that hub motors generally have extra resistance when unpowered, so not only are you fighting against extra weight when you run out of battery but there's all this extra resistance from the motor too... While mid-drives will have clutches so it's not an issue.
