Luckily, with modern e-bikes, range is not much of a concern.  We have a Shimano E-8000 with the 504 Kwh battery on our big, heavy cargo bike and never come close to running low on battery.

The only time we had to ride with no e-assist, is when the bike went dark after a crash during a firmware update using a smartphone.  Had to ride unpowered to the LBS.  Thankfully, the Shimnao e-assist system does not cause much drag when riding with no power.
