Commuting by bike is an easy way to get some exercise in a time-efficient manner... and Chicago start-up Xmera think they may have created the ultimate machine for getting a workout on the go, a 'Bionic Bike' with body sensors and loads of smart tech in a retro-looking chassis that's now crowdfunding on Indiegogo.
Get the best range from your e-bikeDesigned to look like an old-school motorbike, the Xmera comes with either 750 watt or EU-friendly 250 watt motors, with a battery range between 37 and 124 miles depending on which spec/how many batteries you choose.
The smart features include their Cardio e-Bike BPM technology, which allows riders to set their desired BPM and then the bike adjusts power to maintain it according to your personal needs. You can do fat burn, HIIT or general cardio sessions, and you can also connect your smart watch via Bluetooth for post-ride analysis.
Xmera have their own app so you can track all your workouts, including mileage, calories burned and goals. There's an optional-extra Xmera BPM band (available in some of the higher value Indiegogo pledge amounts) that shows your heart-rate data on-screen, and also the Xmera Wavetech helmet (available in 2020) that uses brain wave technology to provide in-ear workout info.
The 6061 alloy frame is complimented by front hub suspension for plenty of comfort, stopping power is provided by mechanical disc brakes and the tough 3" tyres should be able to take on any terrain.
Other features include IoT Tracking Technology, providing GPS location tracking so you know where the bike is at all times, and an emergency contact function that texts or calls when it senses an accident.
All this tech doesn't come cheap, although by backing Xmera on Indiegogo you can get some pretty alarming discounts - an 'Ultimate Bird' model with the 250 watt motor has an RRP of $3,699, but the first 50 backers can sign up to get one for just $999. The top level package which includes the Xmera 750S Plus, the smart bracelet and a spare battery can be bought for $2,957, 50% off the $5,915 RRP.
All too good to be true, or do you reckon the Xmera is set to take off? They've raised over half of their $30,000 crowdfunding target with a month to go and estimated shipping on all models is January 2020, so we'll be following with interest to see how this one goes...
