Following in the footsteps of many an automotive brand before them, Japanese manufacturer Honda has debuted a concept electric bike at the Japanese Mobility Show. This isn’t the brand’s first foray into the electric bike market, however, as they previously released e-bike versions of their old motorbikes and mopeds for the Chinese market.
The new e-bike, however, takes a very different tack and looks to be a full-suspension mountain bike. Although, from first glance it almost looks like a trials motorbike.
According to GCN, the model on display at the Japanese Mobility Show was equipped with Shimano disc brakes, a SRAM Eagle AXS drivetrain, and Fox suspension components. The motor, however, remains unconfirmed, although there have been reports that it could be a Brose Drive S Mag system with images of the display unit printed with ‘Brose’ branding.
E-bike Japan also reports that the frame is made from thin-walled aluminium casting, which is the same material found on some Honda motorbikes.
Elsewhere, it appears the bike comes with some sort of portable battery charger, which could be an interesting add-on accessory if the concept becomes commercially available.
Even with few details available, this certainly looks like an aggressive take on an electric mountain bike concept, and continues to show Honda’s progression in the e-mobility sphere. Just last month they revived their Motocompacto e-scooter/moped with the product said to be available later this month.
