Italian tyre powerhouse Pirelli will this month launch its latest e-bike-suitable tyres, the Cycle-e range, and they're created using recycled crumbs of old tyres recycled from the motor industry.
The tyres, originally announced at Eurobike this year, are said to support the company’s “commitment to sustainable mobility” – an approach to tyre construction that we wholeheartedly approve of.
The tyres come in five models, headlined by a 37-57mm ‘Granturismo’ tyre designed for the demands of speed pedelecs and faster-rolling e-bikes with knowledge ported over from its experience in the motorcycle industry.
Then comes the Downtown (37-50mm) and Downtown Sport models (32-47mm) which represent the all-weather city use corner of the market, and the similarly-sized Crossterrain and Crossterrain Sport models (also 37-50 and 32-47mm respectively) which feature deeper tread patterns and dimples on the side walls for gravel use.
It’s the construction that has us in a spin, though, featuring the recycled material from old motor industry tyres to form the ‘cap’ compound that sits in contact with the road. It’s said to produce good grip, comfort and reliability in all conditions, while its underpinned by a tough base compound that doubles as a puncture protection layer.
