Described as "one of the most capable cargo bikes in the galaxy", we reckon Surly's brand new Big Easy e-cargo bike looks the absolute business. It's $5,000 and only available in the US, but we think this serious steel epic is worth shouting about!
The rise of the compact cargo bike
It's equipped with the Bosch Performance CX drive unit, and is also capable of running dual batteries to extend the range. The battery and display is also courtesy of Bosch in the form of the PowerPack 500 and Purion respectively. The 4130 Chromoly frame with a double-butted main triangle was specifically built to accommodate a Bosch mid-drive, and you also get a quality Surly steel fork and stainless seatpost - there is also routing for dropper posts so the Big Easy can be shared amongst big or little riders.
The standover height clearance has been increased, and there's a damping headset for smooth and stable handling even when you're loaded up. The frame integration also takes Surly's Bill and Ted trailers for maximum load capabilities. The huge 26” x 2.5” ExtraTerrestrial tyres also mean you can take the Big Easy off-road.
You can find out more about the bike on Surly's website here. We were a little gutted to find out that it's only available for North American residents at the moment, but we've asked Surly if they plan to send any across the pond with EU-certified electric components... let's hope so, because we want a go!
